Did I mention that in ancient times, meat was thrown into the diamond pits so that falcons would go down and eat the meat and possibly ingest a diamond or two in the process? Not sure how the humans found the falcons or even found the diamonds inside the birds’ stomachs but that’s one of the myths I’ve studied since I began my fascination with diamonds. Maybe they poisoned the birds so they’d die right there or just outside the pit.

“There’s that word ingested again,” Cullen said, making a note. “I can’t believe I never picked up on that or the word poison before.”

“You were reading these letters to hear about diamonds, not birds or poison.”

He gave her a thoughtful glance but didn’t say anything.

Esther read another earlier letter, amazed and touched that her father had recalled how he used to take her to the Audubon Zoo when she was small. Those precious memories seemed overshadowed by danger now. How she wished she could have one more day with her father.
